Description:

Faye Wong's famous "Pledge" from her classic 1994 album, Sky. It was a significant milestone for popular music in Asia as one of the first popular songs to seamlessly combine musical elements from the East and West. The clearest examples of this are the solos performed on the chinese bamboo flute Dizi, by ex-husband Dou Wei, and Faye's folk singing at the end. The credits for the music of this song go to the team of Faye and Dou Wei, while she wrote the lyrics herself. Faye has often said that her lyrics reflect her inner feelings at the time of their creation. Here, the lyrics of "Pledge" seem to hint at Dou Wei's infidelity and its effects on their relationship, forshadowing their divorce a few years later. This classic music video, directed by Susie Au (區雪兒) and shot over 16 hours, has Faye bouncing around the streets of Hong Kong, sporting the pineapple hair style, previously worn by Bjork. Her music videos often showcase her unique body language, as is the case here and in her movies like Chungking Express and 2046. Lyrics - English translation from wongfaye.org I thought that we could be together forever Lots of times, I think of this and I don't want to fall asleep If you could give me a sincere certainty It doesn't matter; nothing matters to me The road ahead is perhaps not too clear After I proceed on confidently, perhaps I'll find it exhausting Perhaps I'll want to stop but can't stop The darker the sky becomes, the more tired my heart becomes I saw your face, listened to your unvoiced pledge At that moment I discovered That one day I walked past you and didn't catch your gaze I take my heart and give it to you to console Is it possible for me not to have to take it back? [Please] don't think that an assiduous heart is unbreakable [Please] don't think that nothing matters to me Lyrics - By Faye Wong More information on Faye Wong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faye_Wong

This song has nothing to do with HK. It was co-written by Faye Wong and her ex-husband, Dou Wei, A Chinese mainland musician.

Faye wrote the lyric herself, and she was also one of the composers. Amasing voice. Faye is the best. Who care about the Bjork crap.

It's absurd to blame Faye for the Bjork ripoff. She is, or was anyway, a creative genius. The fact that her handlers and producers were slavishly aping Western pop to make a buck certainly wasn't her fault - her career was just taking off and she had little control of her 'image' at that time.

The song was fantastic... still is... the problem is Faye's people were adamant on having her lift an image and she chose Bjork to a "T"... AND it's blatant. It shouldn't take away from the brilliance of her music though. As she matured... her image changed.

This supposed 'classic' video is total rip off of Bjork. Not only hair, but whole 'singer acts kooky on streets'. Add a truck and you've got video for 'Big Time Sensuality', which came out about a year previous, I believe. Typical Hong Kong, even the cool stuff is a rip off of much cooler stuff from the west. And Bjork is still making original music, whereas poor old WF is trapped in HK celebrity-tabloid hell, it seems.

Typical HK..not bad song or video (kind of great song in fact), but video is bad fudge job of Wong Kar-wai movies and Bjork - not only hairstyle, but whole of video, clearly aping vid for 'Big Time Sensuality' which was about a year old at the time. Substitutes 'kooky singer on truck' for 'kooky singer on foot' is all. Typical HK, the only cool stuff is stealing cool stuff from the west.

The first two signs in the title mean "Faye Wong", right?
